Working across video, performance, sculpture and installation, Mona Hatoum’s expansive practice offers a poetic and political view of a world characterised by conflict and contradictions.

“Mona Hatoum was chosen in recognition of her pioneering work in performance, installation and sculpture; and in raising our awareness of non-western perspectives,” said Iwona Blazwick (Director, Whitechapel Gallery).

Launched in 2014, the Art Icon award, supported by Swarovski, celebrates the work of an artist who has made a profound contribution to a particular medium, influencing their own and subsequent generations of artists.

The award, now in its fifth year, has previously been awarded to artists Sir Howard Hodgkin, Richard Long, Joan Jonas and, most recently, Peter Doig.
